String Quintet in C Major, Op. 163, D. 956 | Franz Schubert
I Allegro ma non troppo

Total duration: 65 minutes
Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703, is characterized by a single movement of intense and turbulent character. Throughout this movement, abrupt contrasts emerge alongside restrained lyricism and haunting premonitions of anguish, all condensed into a predominantly dramatic narrative.
Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 956—his final chamber work, composed just weeks before his death—marks a profound contrast in character. With the special participation of cellist Filipe Quaresma, the quartet expands by adding a second cello to the texture. This piece is strikingly different from the previous one: far more hopeful, luminous, and transcendent in spirit.
